Holiday cocktails that won’t ruin your diet

It’s hard to believe that yet another holiday season is in full swing – we all know what that means: With all the holiday festivities comes the socializing… and with the socializing comes the eating and drinking (especially the drinking when you’re doing your obligatory family time)… and with the eating and drinking comes the “oh shit, what have I done?!” panic when you can’t button your jeans… and with the “oh shit, what have i done?!” panic comes the New Years diet resolutions… and we all know how those go.

So I propose that we cut this shit off before it starts.

What better place to begin than the root of so many fond memories and blackouts: alcohol. The good news is you can have your fun and drink it too if you swap out popular, high-calorie drinks with some of my favorite, streamlined cocktails:

Down the Hatch!
Vodka and soda
A vodka and soda typically contains 1 oz. of vodka and 5 oz. of soda water –  for a grand total of 65 calories. Add a little flavor with a squeeze of lemon or lime.

Run for the Hills!
There’s a reason these taste so good. 556 reasons, actually – that is the number of calories in a mudslide (about the same number of calories in a Big Mac). Each of these mean little cocktails pack a punch with 1.5 oz. Vodka, 1.5 oz. Kahlua, 1.5 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream, and 1.5 oz. Half-and-Half. You could have eight vodka and sodas for fewer calories than one mudslide. If that’s not a reason to swap, I don’t know what is!

Down the Hatch!
Rum and Diet Coke
This is my go-to – Captain Morgan and Diet Coke with a lime. 65 Calories in a 1-shot drink. Delicious!

Run for the Hills!
Pina Colada
Holy hell, these are bad. Like, 586 calories bad. Each drink contains 3 oz. Rum, 3 oz. Coconut Cream, and 6 oz. Pineapple Juice. Granted, it’s three times the alcohol of a Captain and Diet, but you could have nine Captain and Diets for the same amount of calories.

Down the Hatch!
Skinny Margarita
A skinny margarita, made with 1 oz. tequila, 12 oz Sprite Zero and a splash of both lemonade Crystal Light and lime juice contains just 90 calories.

Run for the Hills!
Far more potent than the Skinny in both alcohol and calories is the traditional margarita. With 4 oz. tequila, 4 oz. margarita/sour mix, 2 oz. triple sec, lime juice, and 1 tsp. sugar, this sweet concoction will cost you 550 calories. Granted, one will probably do you in, but if that’s your goal, just do three shots of tequila (no, really, don’t… trust me).

Down the Hatch!
Jack and Diet
Like the Rum and Diet, this drink will only set you back 65 calories. I’m not a fan of whiskey, personally (it was a long night, and there was a lot of mixing with beer involved), but if it’s your poison of choice, this is your best bet.

Run for the Hills!
Irish Coffee
These are pretty tasty on a cold winter night, but the Bailey’s and whipped cream brings the calorie count of this whiskey and coffee drink up to 320 calories.

Down the Hatch!
Gin and Diet Tonic
This simple drink contains just 1.5 oz. Gin and 6 oz. Diet Tonic – totaling 115 calories. Add some lime to dress it up a little.

Run for the Hills!
Pink Lady
So if the idea of drinking a raw egg white isn’t enough to repulse you, maybe the 260 calories in this drink are. A pink lady contains 1.5 oz. gin, 1 egg white, 1 tsp cream, and 1 tsp of grenadine.

Never, ever, EVER drink this: Long Island Iced Tea
A 10 oz. long island contains 1.5 oz Vodka, 1.5 oz Rum, 1.5 oz Tequila, 1.5 oz Gin, 1.5 oz Triple Sec, 2 oz Sweet and Sour and 0.5 oz Cola – to the tune of 543 calories. You will probably also have to peel yourself off the ground at some point during the evening if you drink one of these (this is pure speculation, of course).

So – what is your drink of choice?
